How far do you hit your golf clubs? A statistic from the PGA Tour

On the PGA Tour, distance data is collected and analyzed for each player at every event and tournament. This is done with so-called launch monitors such as Trackman, Flightscope, ErnestSports etc.. Perhaps you're wondering how far the average shot is on the professional tour? So you can compare yourself.

That's pretty interesting information. Maybe you're not that far off, or maybe you are. As I said, these are average values, so there are outliers at the top and bottom. One of the longest players, for example, is Bubba Watson with an average total driving distance of 296 meters. One of the shortest, for example, is K.J. Choi with 251 meters. Unfortunately, these are not carry values, but the total length with roll. On the LPGA Tour, the women hit the driver an average of 250-270 meters, which is impressive.

Average carry length on the PGA Tour

Racket Width (carry) in meters
Driver 246
Wood 3 222
Wood 5 210
Hybrid 206
Iron 3 194
Iron 4 186
Iron 5 177
Iron 6 167
Iron 7 157
Iron 8 146
Iron 9 135
PW 124

The average carry distances indicate how far the ball flies without rolling. If the development of golf clubs and golf balls continues at this rate, many golf courses will become increasingly too short. In addition, every professional golfer trains his fitness and speed, which further exacerbates the situation. Perhaps one day there will be golf balls that only fly a maximum of 250 meters. Who knows? The average driver length for amateurs is around 210 to 230 meters with a handicap of around 10.

How can you determine their lengths yourself?

You can determine your own shot lengths in different ways, there are several methods. The simplest is to hit lots of balls down the length or into a net using a launch monitor such as Trackman, FlightScope or ErnestSports. These devices spit out the length and many other parameters for each stroke in a matter of seconds. The only disadvantage is that the devices are not cheap. The ES B1 from Ernest Sports would be a comparably priced device for exactly this purpose.

You can also work with a Golf Rangefinder on the round or on the range. This takes a little longer until you have all the lengths together, but it is also possible. One Article about the possibilities of measuring the stroke width we have already written.
