Training series: Golf exercise #7 - Better putting

Exercise #7 deals with putting. More specifically, the putting movement and hitting the ball precisely in the sweet spot. If you hit the ball just millimeters from the sweet spot, it will roll a few centimeters shorter than a well-hit ball. This makes a difference in practice, but you may not even notice it. The important thing is that you hit the ball as consistently as possible in the sweet spot with a repeatable putting motion. And how do I practise this? Here are two useful exercises that are often practiced by Tiger Woods and other pros.

Putting exercise 1 - Checking the swing path

Align the alignment sticks towards the hole and look for a hole that is as straight as possible without a break. Use the two alignment sticks to force yourself to putt as straight as possible. The putter must swing in the path, especially just before and behind the ball, otherwise it will touch the sticks. With a larger putting movement, the putter head naturally does not move completely in a straight line, but in a circular path around your body. But the 10 centimetres before and after contact with the ball are particularly important. The putter head should swing as straight as possible towards the target.

Putting Exercise 2 - Putt Trainer

The putt trainer forces you to hit the ball in the sweet spot. Any slightest deviation of the putter head up or down will catch on the tees. You may have seen Tiger Woods on the putting green. Quite often you see him doing exactly this exercise. You have to hit the ball in the sweet spot so that the ball goes through the gate. This improves consistency of impact and better putts.

Aims of this golf exercise:

  • You train your dexterity and accuracy
  • You build up a repeatable putting motion
  • You are forced to hit the ball in the sweet spot

Incidentally, this exercise complements exercise #3 very well Putt-Circle by Phil Mickelson.

Putting exercise 3 - Smaller target requires precision

The Putt-Trainer 3 - the practical practice hole - can be made smaller simply by turning it. This trains precision and, ultimately, accuracy. It can be used anywhere, at home on the putting mat or on the putting green.

Putting exercise 4 - Better putting movement

A very popular putting aid - even among professionals - is the guided putting rail. It is particularly suitable for short and medium putts where the movement should be relatively straight. Tees can be inserted on the left and right to control the length of the putting movement.
